Munros
What are the Munros?
The Munros are the mountains in Scotland higher than 3,000 feet (914.4 m) that the Scottish Mountaineering Club lists as separate mountains. The list is named after Sir Hugh Munro, who first published it in 1891. There is no fixed prominence rule: a summit becomes a Munro when the SMC judges it distinct enough from its neighbors, and lesser summits are kept as Munro Tops instead. The current list has 282 Munros, running from Ben Nevis at 1,345 m down to Beinn Teallach at 915 m. They range from the Southern Highlands near Loch Lomond to Ben Hope in the far north, with twelve on Skye and one on Mull.

Climbing the Munros
Most Munros are long hill days rather than technical climbs, but Scottish weather makes them serious. Summits are often in cloud, navigation matters, and winter conditions can arrive in any month above 900 m. Many peaks are climbed in groups along a ridge, such as the Mamores, the Fisherfield round or the Grey Corries, while remote ones need a long walk in or a night in a bothy. The Cuillin of Skye is the exception: its Munros involve real scrambling, and the Inaccessible Pinnacle needs a rope. Finishing all 282 usually takes years. Yak lists every Munro with its standard route and trailhead so you can plan the next one and watch the count climb.
Frequently asked questions
How many Munros are there?
There are 282 Munros on the current Scottish Mountaineering Club list. The number has changed over the years as surveys refined heights and the SMC revised which summits count as separate mountains. The most recent change came in 2012, when Beinn a' Chlaidheimh was found to be just under 3,000 feet and moved to the Corbetts.
What is the highest Munro?
Ben Nevis, near Fort William, is the highest at 1,345 m (4,413 ft). It is also the highest mountain in the British Isles. Most people climb it by the Mountain Track from Glen Nevis, while the North Face and the Carn Mor Dearg Arete offer harder lines.
What is the lowest Munro?
Beinn Teallach, above Glen Spean, is the lowest at 915 m. It sits only a few feet over the 3,000 foot line, and it became the lowest Munro when Beinn a' Chlaidheimh was reclassified in 2012.
What is the hardest Munro to climb?
The Inaccessible Pinnacle on Sgurr Dearg in the Skye Cuillin is the only Munro that needs rock climbing. Its summit is a blade of rock with an exposed Moderate climb up the east ridge and an abseil down. Several other Cuillin Munros, such as Sgurr Mhic Choinnich and Am Basteir, need confident scrambling.
What is the difference between a Munro, a Munro Top, a Corbett and a Graham?
A Munro is a separate mountain over 3,000 feet. A Munro Top is a subsidiary summit over 3,000 feet that the SMC does not count as a separate mountain. Corbetts are Scottish hills between 2,500 and 3,000 feet with at least 500 feet of drop on all sides, and Grahams are the hills between 2,000 and 2,500 feet with at least 150 m of drop.
When is the best time to climb the Munros?
Late spring through early autumn has the longest days and the most settled weather, and May and June are often the driest months. Midges are worst in low, still conditions in summer. From August to October, check local deer stalking notices on estate land. In winter the Munros become snow and ice mountains that need an ice axe, crampons and winter skills.
Can you climb the Munros without permission?
Yes. Scotland has a right of responsible access to most land under the Scottish Outdoor Access Code, so you do not need a landowner's permission to walk to a summit. Follow the code: park considerately, leave gates as you find them, keep dogs under control, and respect stalking and lambing requests.
Track the Munros
Log each Munro as you climb it and watch your count climb toward 282.
