Catskill 3500
What is the Catskill 3500?
The Catskill 3500 is the Catskill 3500 Club's official tally of Catskill High Peaks open to the public: 33 summits in New York's Catskill Park. A peak qualifies when it stands above 3,500 feet, with Rocky Mountain kept on the list even though modern survey puts it a few feet under that mark. In 2021 the club dropped Graham Mountain and Doubletop Mountain after public access closed, cutting the required list from 35 to 33. Fourteen of the peaks are trailless bushwhacks with summit canisters. Club membership also asks for winter repeats of Slide, Blackhead, Balsam, and Panther; those repeats are not extra peaks on this Yak list.

Hiking the Catskill 3500
Trail peaks such as Slide, Hunter, the Burroughs Range, and the Devil's Path summits use DEC marked trails from well known lots on Oliverea Road, Spruceton Road, and Platte Clove. The canister peaks need herd paths and careful navigation off trail through blowdown and spruce thickets. Many hikers start with Slide and the Blackhead Range, then work through the Devil's Path, and finish with the western bushwhacks around Big Indian, Fir, and North Dome. Winter on the four required repeats is a different project: short days, deep snow, and ice on the ledges. Yak tracks each peak with its standard approach so you can plan the next one and watch the count climb.
Frequently asked questions
How many peaks are on the Catskill 3500 list?
There are 33. The Catskill 3500 Club reduced the required list from 35 to 33 on March 22, 2021, after Graham Mountain and Doubletop Mountain closed to the public.
Why is Rocky Mountain still on the list under 3,500 feet?
The club keeps Rocky Mountain on the official tally even though modern survey puts the summit at about 3,487 feet. It has long been part of the High Peak tradition, and the club chose to retain it when elevations were refined.
What is the highest Catskill 3500 peak?
Slide Mountain in Ulster County, about 4,180 feet. It is the high point of the Catskills. The standard hike is the Phoenicia East Branch and Burroughs Range Trails from the Slide Mountain parking area on Oliverea Road.
How many Catskill 3500 peaks are bushwhacks?
Fourteen peaks have no marked trail to the summit and use herd paths to a canister: Southwest Hunter, Lone, Big Indian, Friday, Rusk, Kaaterskill High Peak, Fir, Balsam Cap, North Dome, Eagle, Mount Sherrill, Vly, Halcott, and Rocky. The rest have DEC trails or short scrambles from a trail.
Do I need winter climbs for the Catskill 3500 Club?
For club membership, yes: you must also climb Slide, Blackhead, Balsam, and Panther between December 21 and March 21. Yak's Catskill 3500 quest tracks the 33-peak list year round; log those four again in winter if you are pursuing club membership.
When is the best time to hike the Catskill 3500?
Late spring through fall for most of the list, when herd paths are free of deep snow and the spruce thickets are a bit more open. Mud season in April can be rough on trails. Winter is the season for the four required repeats, with microspikes or snowshoes depending on conditions.
