Climbing the Teton 11,000ers

The list covers a wide range of climbing. Table Mountain, Mount Woodring, Prospectors Mountain, and Ranger Peak are Class 2, while Grand Teton, Mount Owen, Mount Moran, and Cleaver Peak need roped Class 5 climbing. Lupine Meadows is the hub for the central peaks, String Lake serves Paintbrush Canyon and Leigh Lake, and the Death Canyon area covers Buck Mountain and Prospectors. The northern peaks start with water: Mount Moran and Thor Peak begin with a paddle across String and Leigh Lakes, and Doane, Ranger, Eagles Rest, and Peak 11,257 begin with a crossing of Jackson Lake from Colter Bay. Many climbs are two-day trips with a backcountry camping permit. Yak shows each peak's standard route, trailhead, and stats so you can plan the next one and watch the count climb.

Frequently asked questions

How many Teton 11,000ers are there?

There are 28 on the commonly tracked list: every ranked summit in the Teton Range at or above 11,000 feet with at least 400 feet of prominence. Named sub-summits with less prominence, such as Teepe Pillar, Cloudveil Dome, and East Prong, do not count.

What is the highest and lowest Teton 11,000er?

Grand Teton is the highest at 13,775 feet, followed by Mount Owen, Middle Teton, Mount Moran, and South Teton. McClintock Peak, at about 11,013 feet, is the lowest summit on the list.

Which Teton 11,000ers are the easiest?

Table Mountain is the gentlest, with a trail nearly to the top from the North Teton Trailhead in Idaho and a short Class 2 scramble at the summit block. Mount Woodring, Prospectors Mountain, Ranger Peak, Mount Fryxell, Buckingham Palace, and Peak 11,093 are also Class 2 by their standard routes, though most are long days with off-trail travel.

Which Teton 11,000ers need technical climbing?

Grand Teton, Mount Owen, Mount Moran, and Cleaver Peak need roped Class 5 climbing on their standard routes. Several others, including South Teton, Teewinot, Thor Peak, Nez Perce, Disappointment Peak, Mount Wister, and Veiled Peak, involve Class 4 terrain where many parties carry a rope.

Do any Teton 11,000ers require a boat?

Yes. The standard approaches to Mount Moran and Thor Peak cross String and Leigh Lakes by canoe, and Doane Peak, Ranger Peak, Eagles Rest Peak, and Peak 11,257 start with a paddle across Jackson Lake from Colter Bay. Every boat needs a Grand Teton boat permit and an aquatic invasive species inspection.

What permits do I need to climb the Teton 11,000ers?

Peaks inside Grand Teton National Park need a park entrance pass. Overnight trips need a backcountry camping permit, reserved on Recreation.gov or picked up as a walk-up, and canoe approaches need a boat permit. Table Mountain, Maidenform Peak, and Cleaver Peak start from the Idaho side outside the park.

Why are some Teton 11,000ers unnamed?

Two ranked summits have no official name, so the list uses their height: Peak 11,257, on the ridge between Eagles Rest Peak and Doane Peak, and Peak 11,093, just west of Buck Mountain above Death Canyon. Peak 11,257 was called Anniversary Peak by its first ascent party, but that name is not official.

Is Static Peak a Teton 11,000er?

Static Peak is not on the commonly tracked list of 28, so Yak leaves it out to match the list climbers use.
