Colorado Centennials

What are the Colorado Centennials?

The Colorado Centennials are the 100 highest ranked summits in Colorado. A summit is ranked when it rises at least 300 feet above the saddle connecting it to any higher neighbor, the same rule used for the ranked 14ers. The list includes all 53 ranked fourteeners and the 47 highest thirteeners, so it runs from Mount Elbert at 14,440 feet down to Niagara Peak at 13,816 feet. The 13ers on the list are spread across seven ranges, with the San Juans holding the most, and they include some of the most remote and technical summits in the state.

Climbing the Centennials

Most climbers come to the Centennials after the 14ers, and the 13ers on the list feel different. Crowds thin out, trails often fade before the summit, and many finishes are off-trail talus or scrambling. A handful of peaks in the Needle Mountains start with a ride on the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad and a multi-day backpack, and Jagged Mountain is widely considered the hardest summit on the list. Finishing takes most people several seasons. Yak shows the whole list in one place, including the 14ers you have already climbed, so you can see how close you are to 100.

Frequently asked questions

How many peaks are on the Colorado Centennials list?

There are 100: all 53 ranked Colorado 14ers plus the 47 highest ranked 13ers. Unranked 14ers such as North Eolus, El Diente Peak and Conundrum Peak are not on the list because they fall short of the 300 foot prominence rule.

What is the lowest peak on the Centennials list?

Niagara Peak in the San Juans is number 100 at 13,816 feet. The cutoff is tight: Arrow Peak, Trinity Peak and Niagara Peak all sit within a foot of each other at the bottom of the list.

Why do some older Centennials lists differ?

Modern LiDAR and survey data changed several elevations and prominences. North Maroon Peak moved onto the list, while Challenger Point, Teakettle Mountain, Dallas Peak and Columbia Point dropped off. Yak uses the current post-LiDAR list.

What is the highest 13er in Colorado?

Grizzly Peak in the Sawatch Range, just under 14,000 feet. It is the highest peak on the list after the 14ers and a popular first Centennial.

What is the hardest Colorado Centennial?

Jagged Mountain in the Needle Mountains is usually rated the hardest. It requires a long backpack from the Needleton train stop and a technical summit block. Turret Peak, Pigeon Peak and Vestal Peak are also serious climbs.

Do I need to finish the 14ers before starting the Centennials?

No. Many climbers pick up Centennial 13ers alongside their 14ers, often on the same trip. Because every ranked 14er is also a Centennial, any 14ers you have logged in Yak already count toward the list.
