What are the Alpine 4,000ers?

The Alpine 4,000ers are the summits in the Alps that rise at least 4,000 metres (13,123 feet) above sea level. In 1994 the UIAA, the international federation for climbing and mountaineering, published an official list of 82 summits with the Italian Alpine Club. Each summit had to rise at least 30 metres above its highest adjacent col, with further judgment applied for shape and mountaineering significance. An extended list adds 46 lesser summits. The peaks lie in Switzerland, Italy and France, with many on shared borders. Mont Blanc is the highest at about 4,806 metres, with figures varying slightly by survey.

Collecting the 4,000ers

The 82 summits are clustered in a few massifs, including the Pennine Alps around Zermatt, the Mont Blanc massif and the Bernese Oberland. Many climbers tick off several on one ridge traverse and return for the isolated ones over many seasons. Yak keeps a single list across all three countries so you can see which remain.
